CONTROLLING THE DEGRADATION RATE OF Mg ALLOYS USED FOR TEMPORARY IMPLANTS BY THIN FILM METALLIC GLASSES

Magnesium (Mg) alloys degrade rapidly, leading to premature mechanical failure, which limits new bone formation and osseointegration. The rapid release of hydrogen gas upon degradation may cause discomfort and potential implant failure. Moreover, the use of thin film metallic glasses (TFMGs) for temporary implants, focusing on the control of film chemical composition, structure, topography, mechanical properties, biodegradation, bone cell interactions, and antibacterial properties, has never been studied. The Romanian team has experience in TFMG fabrication and characterization, while the Turkish team has expertise in biological assays and medical device biocompatibility. In the DegraMag project, we will use cathodic arc evaporation to coat Mg alloy (AZ31B) surfaces with Zr-Cu-based amorphous and Ti-Zr-based crystalline thin films, incorporating bioactive elements such as Ca and Sr to stimulate osteoblast functions and enhance bioactivity. Copper will be included in the coatings to target Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Gram-negative Escherichia coli (E. coli) strains, preventing colonization and biofilm formation. The coatings will slow down AZ31B alloy degradation, allowing the implant to stay in the body longer to support bone healing and dissipate hydrogen gas. This could expand the use of magnesium alloys and eliminate the need for secondary surgeries, especially for pediatric patients.
